Savior of Light | What is it?

Savior of Light is a 2D, top-down, action-adventure game set in a fantasy environment. Vanta, the main character, has to save the light by defeating the champion of each of the three different worlds.
The player starts off with a legendary sword called kaleidoscope, which functions as their main method of damaging enemies. Each world gives the player a new ability to use that helps them defeat that world, from a dash to a projectile, to even a bomb. Savior of Light is set in a 3/4ths perspective with the camera looking “down” at the characters. This means that the player can move in all four directions freely, and combat circulates around this.
Savior of Light was created for the Media Arts and Game Design course called “Team Projects” where students get into groups and create a semester-long project utilizing all of their skills. Our team had three different primary positions, those being environment designer, art designer, and programmer.
Savior of Light | Leading a Team
In Savior of Light, I served as the project lead, the lead programmer, as well as the lead sound/music designer. I created code for every aspect of the project, and oversaw any code used in other portions of the project, such as the title screen image swapping. Due to certain circumstances with the secondary programmer, this project was essentially coded entirely by me, with any additional code needing correction by me.
I also aided the artists in learning how to work with tiles and transferring tile maps into Unity, as the main environment background was created in Tiled. Given that our team consisted of three artists and two programmers, allowing our environmental artist to create maps within Tiled gave everyone something to work on during the process. Additionally, I helped with the art direction by working with each artist individually on the aesthetic the game was going for, even going so far as creating concept art for enemies and characters to give artists a better idea of what to draw.
Creating music and sound was not my highest priority when making this game, but I did my best to add music that fit each world tonally and sounds that were memorable and distinct for the player. This project was most certainly the largest project I have worked on as of the end of the Fall 2021 semester, and presented many challenges with scheduling, coordination, and team management that I had to overcome.
