ESC4P3 | What is it? 

E5C4P3 is a side-scrolling, limited runner where the player has to jump, slide, and fly their way through levels. E5C4P3’s art style attempts to portray a world of 80’s retro synth-wave combined with simple pixel art. Games like CANABALT and Temple Run were the initial inspiration for E5C4P3.

The game has three levels with two unique powerups between them, one that flips the player’s gravity, and one that turns the player into a ship, allowing them to fly up and down freely with a removal of sliding and jumping.

E5C4P3 was created for the Media Arts and Game Design capstone course called “Portfolio Development” where, in the last month of the semester, students were tasked with pitching and creating a portfolio-ready project that demonstrated their unique skills within their major. I created the code, art, and some of the sound effects that went into this game, with royalty free music and additional sound effects. 

ESC4P3 | Solo-Development

In E5C4P3, I needed to create a project that demonstrated my skills in Unity while also making something small enough in scope that I could complete it in the allotted time. Creating this finite runner was the idea that I had pitched in my course, and while nothing was fundamentally difficult within this project, the biggest hurdle came from keeping the scope of the game small enough that I could complete it with the limited time that I had between courses.

I utilized systems that I was working on at the same time on Sounds of Somber, making it so that the player would need to beat a level to unlock the next one, and the game would automatically save that information between playthroughs. I added onto this system, making it so the game saves how many times a player has died in a level, and this information will only be refreshed to zero once the player has beaten a level, even if they quit out of the game. Creating the atmosphere of the game utilized Unity’s lighting system, something I had not attempted prior to this project, and while E5C4P3 is far from perfect, it is a unique game that taught me many things about time management and developing scope based on timeframe.
